Reflecting

_140_245_Book.2250.coverREFLECTING
By Jerome Schorr
Reflecting, a collection of poems, sayings and observations. The author, Jerome Schorr, has put together a collection of over two hundred of his writings that are quite interesting to read. The writings will make you stop and think about things and some offer a different view point. You may or may not like them, but they are worth the reading. There are some that have a Biblical prospective and others are a worldlier prospective. He shares some observations from riding on public transportation and views of things you can see just watching your surroundings. The fun part of this book is seeing the point of view that the author has shared; some humorous, others opens the world around us and some offers help. They are thought provoking.
An example of the writings, Titled Aging:
If you want it to look good on you.
Act young
If you want to hide it.
Feel young;
It requires physical and mental maintenance.
Acceptance
Allow you to be distinguished or matronly.
Whatever your choice,
Remember it’s how you wear it that counts the most.
I found the writing very easy to read and informative. They will add to your day and may make you observe your surroundings differently. It is a collection that you may want to read through again.

Advent – a time of preparing for the coming of the messiah, celebrated on the days before Christmas. Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This book is divided into four weeks of discussion, devotions and activities. The first day consists of reading of scripture and discussions as a family. Next there are five days of devotions including a scripture verse, a short devotion on the topic for that week and then a prayer. The topics are different each week include Hope, Preparation, Joy and Love. The seventh day is a list of activities that can be done individually or as a family. At the end of the four weeks, there is a special Christmas day devotion for all to share. All of this can be done in a group session as well as a family. The first day of each is done on a Sunday and consists of lighting a candle, Prayer and scripture readings.
This book makes learn about Jesus very easy and easy to understand why we should be celebrating this advent season, it will give a new meaning to the reason for the season. The author has setup a web site with helps and downloads to add to the experience.
I think this will be a great way for the family or a small group to share this time of year, it is well written, easy to read and informative. A great way for the family to share a blessed time at Christmas.

I admit that when I first saw the title of this book it made me think of Star Wars series and I almost did not request it, but it is about faith in God not just some invisible force. As the old saying goes “You can’t judge a book by its cover”.

Devotions from the mountains

DEVOTIONS FROM THE MOUNTAINS
By Lisa Ham
Do you love the mountains, then this devotional is for you? Each devotion consists of a scripture verse to start, then adds a short reading, with a beautiful photo of mountain scenery and a prayer at the end. There are a set of five reading to a section, then a full two-page photo of the mountains that is beautiful and awe inspiring. You can start your reading anytime because there are no days or dates on the devotions, so you may use them however you wish. The subjects are different each reading and will give you inspiration for the day. Use each day’s devotion to get that feeling of heaven on earth that you get when you visit the mountains. Through the photos you can enjoy God’s creations and with the scripture verse combined with the reading and prayer to help you have inter peace so you can tackle the day ahead and know that God is with you. A very enjoyable book and would make a great gift for hikers and for anyone who enjoys the out of doors or needs a pick me up.
This verse is on the back of the book;
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121: 1-2

Hope is something we all want and look for. This book lets you know that there is hope available and where to find it, God. In his book, Lee Strobel shares his experiences and experiences of others about hope and what to do. The stories he shares and very inspirational and heartwarming. They show that hope through Christ is unlimited and unfailing hope. He covers subject like, hope in a hopeless world, hope in a transforming life, hope for today and tomorrow, plus others. Lee shares how he became a Christian and how others made the same decision.
A quote for the back cover: “Hope is the inextinguishable flicker God ignites in our souls…when we are surrounded by utter darkness.”
A well written book with useable information for those searching for hope. He includes a 30-day Journey of Hope journal to help meditate on specific passages of scripture. This book would be great for Bible discussion groups.
This review is my own opinion. Unlike other books on this blog, I purchased this book and did not receive it from any publisher. Just wanted to share the contents and information to all who are interested.
