The Parables of Jesus

61mvqFLkk9L._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_THE PARABLES OF JESUS
By James Montgomery Boice
Preaching about the parables since the 1980’s, the author has put together some of those sermons in this book covering the parables that Jesus used to get certain points across to the people. If you enjoy the parables and want to understand them better, this is the book to help you. In this book of twenty-two chapters James has added a lot of information to help understand those points. He has grouped the parables together into categories; such as the kingdom, salvation, wisdom, and Christian life, just to name a few. He shares the meaning that is in scripture and adds some historical facts of the culture and other background information that will help everyone understand the meaning of the parable. He also shares some different viewpoints and shares the viewpoints of Bible commentators of the past. Some of the facts and meanings are uses to give an in-depth view of the parables, making them easier to understand. Some views may even be a different view-point, adding to the usual meaning you have heard.
James states in the preface about the parables: “Other sections of the Bible give us grand theology. Some move us to grateful response to God. But the parables break through mere words and make us ask whether there has indeed been any difference in our lives”.
I found the book easy to read and understand. His interpretations were very refreshing and the facts he shared were very helpful. If you want to study the parables in-depth, use this book as a help in understanding their meanings. The book can be used in Bible studies and discussion groups for added meanings.

365 Devotions
By Randy & Rozanne Frazee
A devotional that will help you with understanding your beliefs and why. The book contains a year of daily devotions divided into three parts: Beliefs, Practices and Virtues. The three parts or sections are divided into ten subjects. Each subject deal with the topic of that part. An example: Beliefs covers God, Personal God, Salvation etc., Practices cover Worship, Prayer, Bible study etc., and Love, Joy, Peace etc. are covered under Virtues. The authors give a scripture verse and a short devotion that helps you to understand the daily verse. You can follow each part in order or be adventitious and do the ten subjects in one section then change to another subject. The devotions are Biblical sound and will be a blessing to your daily readings. The writing in this book will help you understand what you believe and who you are becoming. The hope of the authors with this devotional is to help you to think more like Jesus, act more like Jesus and be more like Jesus.
I believe this book would be great for discussion groups, family Bible times and would make a great gift for young and old. I know there are many different devotionals available but if this one can help you with your beliefs that it would be worth adding to your library. There are no dates to follow, just numbers of the day (Day 1, Day 2, etc.) making it useable any time.

JOYSPRING
A Devotional Adventure with Living Water
By Kathy Woollett
This book is small but is inspiring and fun to read. Kathy start with a parable that she wrote, a story about a small spring that become a stream that travels down a mountain. On the trip down the mountain the stream encounters many obstacles that the stream has to overcome, with the help from others and learns to take those obstacles on head first. The parable tells the story how our lives are affected by different things that come into our life, like rough roads, boundaries and other blockades. It also shows how when we are guided by Christ those blockades and boundaries are easier to handle. Each devotion has a scripture verse, a short devotional story based on the parable and a few thought questions to help you understand each devotion. Each devotion covers a small part of the parable, taking you to the end of the streams travel. The results of the parable will help with a deeper understanding of God’s help and living a full life.
The author writes in her A Closing Word chapter:
“Passing through pressing, menacing cliffs and gorges or overcoming obstacles will happen many times in our journey of faith. Equally there will be many pleasant valleys and still water times too.”
There is less than a hundred pages but the book is very good book for discussion groups and would make a good Sunday school study.

The Age of Promise

_140_245_Book.2482.coverTHE AGE OF PROMISE
Escape the Shadows of the Law to Live in the Light of Christ
By Randy Robison – Cohost of LIFE Today
Old Testament teaching and New Testament teaching, do they go together? In this book by Randy Robison you will see how they do belong together and how they are relevant to our lives now. The book consists of ten chapters that covers some of the promises of the Bible and how they connect Old and New Testaments. The promises are; the promise of deliverance, sacrifice, the law, the chosen people, the priest the temple, judgement, the kingdom, the end and eternity. Each promise is covered in detail from the Old Testament to the New Testament showing the connection to Christ. Randy digs deep into scripture for the truth, which will give you a new understanding to many of the promises. The promise of deliverance was for all who will follow Christ not just those Israelites in Egypt. The other promises are as important today as they were when God made them in the Old Testament. Most of the information will be familiar and is a good review of the Bible covering many points that we should all know.
The book can be used in discussion group and would be helpful in introducing new believers to the Bible. We all need to understand that the Bible is meant as one book not to be separated into two. Randy’s book offers his view and needs to be read with an open mind as some of his points may differ from what you have read by others.

The Lord’s Prayer

9781462771301WHEN WE SAY FATHER
Unlocking The Power Of The Lord’s Prayer
By Adrian Rogers & Steve Rogers
Steve Rogers uses notes and writing of his father Adrian Rogers to share this important book. The writings deal with the Lord’s Prayer and how we should be praying. Jesus gave His disciples this example or guide to use when they asked Him how to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is a guide to be used when we pray, and this book explains the reason why. The words, in this book, are Adrian Rogers’ teaching and he has shared different stories and scripture verses that will help us to understand just how and why prayer is important. He has broken it down in seven sections and explains each section in great detail showing the basic components and promise of prayer from the source, Jesus.
The sections are; The person, the priority, the provision, the pardon, the protection, the praise and the promise.
Each section is very important but the most important of all is the prayer itself. Adrian explains that we need to pray and if we want our prayers answered to remember these three words, ask, seek and knock.
When we ask, we express desire. When we seek, we explore direction. When we knock, we exercise determination. A-S-K is what you need to remember.
The book is not a large book but holds a great deal of information and a lot of help for anyone struggling with their prayer life.
